River training works are various
measures adopted on a river to direct and guide the river flow, to train
and regulate the river bed or to
increase the low water depth. The purpose of river training is to establish the
channel along a certain alignment. Following are the objectives of river
training:-
- To prevent the direction of the flow and to avoid out flanking of structures like bridges, weir and aqueducts.
- To prevent the flooding of the surrounding land by providing a safe passage for the flood water without overtopping the banks.
- To protect the river bank by deflecting the river away from the attacked banks.
- To ensure the effective disposal of sediment load.
- To provide minimum water depth for navigation.
Classification of river Training
Depending
upon the purpose for which a river training program is under is under taken,
the river training works may be classified into following:-
- High water training – training for discharge.
- Low water training – training for discharge
- Mean water training – training for sediment
Types of training works
- Guide bank systems
- Groynes or spurs (Repelling, deflecting, attracting, dehney hockey)
- Levees or embankment
- Bank protection
- Bandalling
- Pitching of banks
- Artificial cutoff
